Abstract
Cutaneous melanoma is a disorganized and uncontrolled growth of melanocytes located in the epidermis. Melanomas can originate from existing pigmented lesions such as nevi or from ¨de novo¨ lesions. There are different predisposing factors for cutaneous melanoma, but the most important is the exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma is always made with a biopsy of the suspicious lesion. The staging of melanoma skin cancer is complex and depends on many factors of the lesion reported by the pathologist after the biopsy. There are different therapeutic options for patients diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma, even for patients in advanced stages, in whom previously only benefited from palliative treatment.
