Abstract
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (which for practical purposes we will cite as JIA) is a systemic, inflammatory, chronic disease of unknown cause that affects patients under 18 years of age. It is considered the most frequent autoimmune and rheumatic disease in children and adolescents. JIA encompasses several different subgroups and occurs predominantly as peripheral arthritis. The spectrum of the disease manifests itself through various clinical conditions. By definition, the onset of the disease before the age of 16 and arthritis for more than 6 weeks are necessary criteria for the diagnosis of JIA. The diagnosis is clinical and the exclusion is made based on laboratory tests, with findings that support the diagnosis. Currently, with the treatments available, disease modifying medications such as methotrexate and biological therapy are first-line; Thus, it is possible to maintain adequate control of the disease and thus avoid possible complications.
