Abstract

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a skin infection caused by a parasite, transmitted by the bite of a vector. Leishmania is endemic in many regions of the world, such as Central and South America and Africa. The type of Leishmania that is most frequently associated with cutaneous leishmaniasis is Leishmania brazilensis. The vectors responsible for inoculating leishmania in patients are of the genus Phlebotomus. The diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis is made through clinical suspicion, due to the characteristic ulcer on exposed skin and is confirmed by histology, by direct observation of the parasite under the microscope.
