Abstract

Lemierre's Syndrome is a rare, life-threatening pathology that is caused by venous thrombosis involving the internal jugular vein after infection of the upper respiratory tract by gram-negative anaerobic microorganisms. The inflammation produced can cause septic emboli in other organs, such as the lungs, soft tissues, spleen, liver and brain.  This condition was previously called "the neglected disease" due to its rarity and the unfamiliarity of physicians with it. This article presents the case of a healthy 18-year-old female patient, in whom Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteremia associated with thrombosis of the left jugular vein and multiple pulmonary septic embolisms is documented after an acute picture of pharyngotonsillitis.
