Abstract
Neck masses are a very frequent reason for consultation in general medicine practice. They may be the only symptom present in an adult, with either a malignant or benign neoplasm of the cervical region. Infectious etiology is one of the most frequent causes; however, malignancy should always be ruled out in patients with risk factors for developing head and neck cancer. Complementary studies must be carried out individually according to the patient. The referral to the specialist should be early as well as the initiation of the specific treatment in order to improve the patient's prognosis.
