Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a pathology with a high incidence and mortality in the population. Oxidative stress cause damage at the mitochondrial level which results in mitophagy and disease progression. The prooxidant states associated with inflammatory reactions cause apoptosis and fibrous remodeling both renal and cardiac levels. There are several molecular pathways involved in the increase of oxidative stress which, when understood, have allowed us to discover biomarkers in order to diagnose and monitor the progression of chronic kidney disease. Currently these pathways are still being investigated in order to develop new therapies for patients with chronic kidney disease.
