Abstract

Open fractures are characterized by the loss of bone continuity and exposure of the fracture site with the external environment, a situation that makes them especially vulnerable to infectious processes and multiple complications. Most open fractures are caused by high energy trauma; occurring more in men and the tibia being the bone that is most frequently affected. They are classified according to the mechanism of injury, the severity of soft tissue injury, the configuration of the fracture and the degree of contamination; being the most used classification of Gustilo and Anderson for their therapeutic utility. The main goals of treatment are to prevent infection, stabilize the fracture, achieve consolidation and restore function; for this, the establishment of antibiotic prophylaxis and adequate soft tissue management is essential.
