Abstract

Chickenpox is a disease caused by the varicella zoster virus, is highly contagious. It manifests by a pruritic maculopapular rash with vesicles and dry crusts. It develops mainly in childhood, and confers lifelong immunity. Varicella has a worldwide distribution, has an autolimited and benign course in most cases, nevertheless if it occurs during pregnancy, there is a risk of developing maternal pneumonitis, congenital varicella syndrome or neonatal varicella infection, in which they all have a mortality rate of 30%. Nowadays, there are some preventive care, such as the varicella vaccine for childbearing women, and for pregnant women and neonates, there is varicella immunoglobulin, besides the treatment with antivirals like acyclovir and valacyclovir.
