Abstract

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is defined as the separation of the vitreous, including its adhesions to the optic nerve, macula and retinal blood vessels. This pathology is frequently related to age, as it has been shown to be more prevalent in people over 50 years of age. One of the most frequent reasons for consultation and that alarm the patient, are the symptoms that include visual alterations such as myodesopsias and photopsias; although it does not represent a significant risk, it is important to know the possible complications that this pathology may present. The main objective of this review is to provide a general synthesis of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) according to the current literature including anatomy, pathophysiology, risk

factors, clinical signs and symptoms, diagnosis, complications and possible treatments. Promoting evidence-based medicine and favoring better patient care. In turn, this review favors medical education by ensuring the dissemination of accurate and updated information.
