Abstract

The ocular papilloma is a disease that affects the eye and originates from the infection of the human papilloma virus (HPV) in the conjunctiva, a membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the eyelids. As a result of this viral infection, bumps or warts form on the ocular surface.

Symptoms of ocular papilloma can vary in intensity and presentation, but commonly include eye redness, irritation, foreign body sensation, itching, and blurred vision. These bumps can be single or multiple, and their size can range from small lesions to larger growths.

Treatment of ocular papilloma usually involves surgical removal of the warts or bumps. For this, various methods are used such as scraping, laser excision or cryotherapy (freezing), with the choice of method depending on the size, location, and specific characteristics of the ocular lesions. In some cases, topical medications may be prescribed to reduce the likelihood of wart recurrence.

It is important to note that ocular papilloma may present a potential risk of malignant transformation. Some warts can become cancerous and develop into conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma. For this reason, periodic follow-up after treatment is recommended to detect any signs of recurrence or malignant change.

As for the prevention of ocular papilloma, it focuses on avoiding exposure to the human papillomavirus. This involves practicing safe sex and avoiding direct contact with broken skin or mucous membranes of infected people. In addition, maintaining good eye hygiene and avoiding sharing eye-related personal care products, such as towels or cosmetics, can help prevent the disease.
