Abstract
Menopause is the cessation of a woman's menstrual periods, diagnosed in retrospect, once twelve consecutive months of amenorrhea have elapsed. It occurs due to atresia of the ovarian follicles and the decrease in their ability to produce estrogens due to the stimulation of follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones.
The most common signs and symptoms are hot flashes, osteoporosis, increased cardiovascular risk, and genitourinary disorders.
The decrease in estrogen production is the cause of the symptoms, so it is important to take hormonal and non-hormonal treatment into account, since the former is not always going to be indicated for all patients. It is essential to individualize each case and thus achieve quality of life for postmenopausal women.
