Abstract
Glaucoma represents a group of diseases defined by characteristic optic neuropathies that consist of remodeling of the connective tissue of the optic nerve and loss of neutral tissue. It is the most frequent cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Its progression usually if intraocular pressure is less than 30-50% of baseline. Chronic forms of glaucoma are not painful and visual symptoms appear later. This is why early detection by the ophthalmologist is so important. Some of the risk factors for glaucoma are: age, elevated intraocular pressure, positive family history and severe myopia. Treatment for glaucoma is based on lowering intraocular pressure based on drugs, laser therapy and surgical interventions.
