Abstract

Vertigo is a frequent cause of consultation in health care services. Vertigo is defined as the illusion of movement of oneself or its surroundings and implies an asymmetry between the activity of the vestibular pathways. It is caused by very diverse etiologies, mostly benign, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; however, it can also be a finding in pathologies that are life-threatening. The approach to a patient with vertigo implies a detailed medical history and application of particular tests in the physical examination that allow to assess the function of the vestibular system. Initially the attending physician should look for and dismiss those etiologies of central origin that threaten the life of the patient and deserve to be managed in an emergency service. Once the causes of central origin have been ruled out, it is important for the general practitioner to know the most common causes of peripheral vertigo, their clinical characteristics and their therapeutic approach; as well as identifying those that deserve to be referred to a specialist.
