Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common complication of diabetes. In most patients, retinopathy develops 10 to 15 years after the diagnosis of diabetes.
With the increasing prevalence of diabetes, more people are at risk for retinopathy. By 2045, 629 million people are expected to have diabetes globally.
By 2010, diabetic retinopathy was responsible for 3.7 million cases of visual problems and more than 833,000 cases of blindness.
The diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy relies on the detection of microvascular lesions.
Treatment of diabetic retinopathy remains a challenge, as existing treatments may fail and fail to achieve clinically meaningful visual improvement.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new treatments that are more effective.
