Abstract

Postsurgical biliary leaks are iatrogenic lesions of the biliary tree, their incidence increased in recent years, mostly associated with the use of laparoscopic surgery as an option for treatment of vesicular and biliary disease. Nowadays the treatment of choice for biliary leaks is endoscopic, which has reduced morbimortality in such cases; however, evidence is scant when it comes to comparing between different approaches (sphincterotomy alone, stenting with leak-bridging stents, stenting with short stents, sphincterotomy with leak-bridging stenting, combination techniques, plastic vs metallic stents, among others), for this reason the main objective of this article is to review detailed current evidence and serve as a guide for the endoscopist while facing a postsurgical biliary leak.
