Abstract

Almost half of preterm births are caused by inflammatory processes, that’s results in a preterm labor. These babies born in an early stage, makes them highly vulnerable by not having, almost every time, a mature organism, most importantly their respiratory system. Most of them will be in the necessity of supplementary oxygen, treatment, and invasions, like long hospital stay, that at long term will take a higher risk of contagious microorganisms that affects its evolution. Mortality in these kids seems especially elevated on those born before 28 weeks of gestation. Prenatal corticosteroid use has shown the decrease of respiratory morbidity in this population, reducing especially the appearance of transient tachypnea of the newborn and respiratory distress syndrome. The use of corticosteroids is one of the most used therapies in preterm labor and one of the most important for having a good outcome in the newborn. In this article will proceed a bibliographic review about recent studies and consensus about the use of antenatal corticosteroids, as well as its benefits and consequences.
