Abstract

Leishmaniasis is a skin disease created by a parasite of the genus Leishmania. In most cases it is a zoonosis transmitted by the bite of a vector. The reservoirs are peridomestic or wild animals.

It constitutes a public health problem in Costa Rica and is considered a disease of the lower social stratum.

It presents 3 clinical forms: visceral, mucocutaneous and cutaneous; the latter being the most common and on which this article is based.

The diagnosis requires clinical suspicion and identification of the parasite, tissue microscopy in order to visualize the parasite is the most used diagnostic technique in the world and in our country.

The first line treatment is pentavalent antimonies, however there are other alternatives as well as local and systemic treatments.
