Abstract
Pos-traumatic stress disorder is defined as an intense emotional reaction to a traumatic event, presenting alteration of sense, consciousness or behavior, which threatens the well-being or life of the individual. It has a multifactorial etiology that must be differentiated from other psychiatric disorders such as depression, acute stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, among others. According to the diagnostic and statical manual of mental disorders fifth edition, the diagnosis is clinical and must be early to have a favorable prognosis. initial management is based on psychotherapy, either in cognitive behavioral therapy or the application of more recent techniques such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. pharmacological treatment includes selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor as the first-line treatment.
