Abstract
The human papillomavirus is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in men and women worldwide, this virus is implicated in the development of cervical cancer. This pathology does not usually present symptoms but an abnormal Pap test in most cases, other associated symptoms in advanced stages are, postcoital bleeding, serosanguineous or yellowish smelly secretion, pelvic pain, hematuria, tenesis rectal and edema of lower limbs. Cervical cancer can be prevented through various tools, such as education regarding the importance of screening with Pap smears, condom use and vaccination against human papillomavirus. The results are used to guide subsequent evaluation with colposcopy and cervical biopsy, which is the gold standard for diagnosis.
