Abstract
Zika virus is considered an emergent disease caused by an arbovirus and transmitted via mosquito and sexually. It has had fast dissemination in the American continent with confirmed cases in over 33 different countries. The virus has a high morbidity in children born to mothers who suffered the disease during pregnancy causing a high cost of care in health services. The pathogenesis by which the virus attacks de fetus is mostly unknown therefore national and international guidelines focus on prevention of the disease by vector control and strict protocols for diagnosis and follow-up of pregnant women who acquire the disease.
