Abstract

The article represents a narrative review on pain management through safe use of medications during pregnancy. It represents an update on the current state of the pharmacological management of pain in pregnant women. More than 20 recent studies in the clinical field were reviewed, published on widely disseminated platforms such as Chocrane, Medline, ScienceDirect, Springer, among others. Approaches to the treatment of pain in pregnant women are described. A general description is made of non-pharmacological management, with emphasis on physical therapy. The main safe medications for pain management in pregnancy are broadly described. The use of paracetamol stands out as the main recommended in the first two trimesters. Weakly effective opioids are recommended throughout the process, especially buprenorphine. Metoclopramide and triptans are recommended for migraine. Pain management must be done with rigorous criteria, taking into account the patient's history and the proven suitability of the medication for the stage of pregnancy. The possible risks must be weighed against the expected benefits.
