Abstract
Cervical cancer is responsible for 7% of global deaths from some type of cancer in women. In most cases it spreads locally and through the lymph nodes. The different HPV genotypes such as 16,18 are those with high oncogenic risk, being responsible for dysplastic lesions of the cervix. The most important risk factor in the genesis of cervical cancer is persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which is a necessary but not sufficient cause for the development of cervical cancer. For prevention, the two most important factors are HPV vaccination and cytology screening tests.
