Abstract

Surgical site infections are one of the most frequent complications worldwide. They increase the morbidity and mortality of patients as well as representing a problem at the global public health level. There are pharmacological and non-pharmacological prophylactic measures, both in children and adults, that seek to reduce the incidence of this post-surgical complication. In addition, there are also risk factors which increase the incidence of these infections such as age, gender, underlying pathologies, degree of wound contamination and its classification. International guidelines that seek to standardize preoperative antibiotic therapy depending on the type of surgery are reviewed, as well as alternatives in cases of allergies to β-lactams.
