Resumen

El oxígeno es un elemento importante del cual depende la vida de los organismo aerobios. Sin embargo, también es responsable de la degeneración que se puede dar a nivel celular en nuestro organismo, generando alteraciones orgánicas y funcionales. Se puede afirmar que en cantidades leves, los radicales libres no son nocivos para el cuerpo humano y más bien son parte de procesos beneficiosos para el organismo, pero conforme aumentan y se acumulan se genera el estrés oxidativo, siendo este coadyuvante de la progresión y evolución de enfermedades degeneravas. En el embarazo saludable es normal que se presente un aumento en la producción de radicales libres debido de la actividad placentaria, sin embargo, esto puede sobrepasar a estrés oxidativo si se presentan estímulos nocivos endógenos o exógenos que contribuyan a la carga de radicales libres. Se pueden desarrollar complicaciones como infertilidad o subfertilidad, aborto, preeclampsia, diabetes gestacional o ruptura prematura de membranas.  Es importante mantener un equilibrio oxidante-antioxidante debido a los desenlaces desfavorables, en madre o feto, que pueden tener las patologías mencionadas.
